Tiles are fine until the grout goes

And the grout always goes.

Grout is porous, so it absorbs grease and moisture. It cracks where the building moves. It discolours, and once it’s discoloured no amount of scrubbing brings it back. Every metre of tiled wall in a kitchen has metres of grout line in it, and each one is a place bacteria can sit and a cleaner can’t reach.

Hygienic wall cladding replaces all of that with large sheets, joined and sealed so the wall becomes one continuous surface. There’s nothing to absorb anything and nothing to scrub out. You wipe it down and it’s clean.

That’s the whole argument, and it’s why cladding has largely replaced tiling in commercial kitchens and clinical areas.

What is Whiterock

It is a 2.5mm hygienic PVC wall cladding system.

Altro Whiterock is a long-established system and the one most often named on a specification, and combined with an Altro floor. It is available in a wide range of finishes – however white is primarily spec’d and used because it is the most cost effective – and colours and can even include matching hygienic doors and door protection.

If your specification names a Whiterock sheet, we’ll fit it. If it doesn’t, we’ll talk you through which makes sense for the room and the budget.

Where it goes

Commercial kitchens, serveries and prep areas. Food production and packing rooms. Clinical rooms, treatment rooms, surgeries and sluices. Veterinary practices. Washrooms, changing rooms and showers. Laboratories. Care home kitchens and assisted bathrooms. Schools and colleges. Swimming pool and leisure changing areas.

Broadly: anywhere the walls need to be cleaned rather than just wiped over, and anywhere an inspector will look at them.

The details

The substrate. Cladding follows whatever it’s fixed to. A wall that isn’t flat, dry and sound will show through, and adhesive won’t stick to a surface that’s damp or friable. It can often go straight over existing tiles, provided that they’re sound and secure.

The joints and corners. Joints are either hot-welded or closed with a two-part strip, and internal and external corners are either thermoformed or treated with a trim. That’s what keeps it a continuous surface.

The junction with the floor. Cladding and coved safety flooring should meet as a single sealed detail, floor coved up the wall and cladding trimmed or lapped over it, so there’s no seam at the exact point where mop water sits. Doing the floor and walls together is quicker and gives you that junction properly.

Common questions

How much does hygienic wall cladding cost?
There is a lot that goes into it, so please send us some details and we’ll look at a quote, or a budget cost for you.

Can it go over our existing tiles?
Provided they’re sound, flat and well adhered.

How long does it take?
It can be considerably quicker than tiling the same area, and with no curing time before you can use the room.

Is it antimicrobial?
All of it is non-porous, which is the main hygiene benefit.

Can it be repaired if it gets damaged?
Yes. Damaged sheets or sections can be cut out and replaced without redoing the wall.

Does it have to be white?
No. Colours, patterns and printed graphics are all available, which is worth knowing if the room is customer-facing.

Can you do the floor at the same time?
Yes, and you should. The floor-to-wall junction is much better detailed when both are done together.
